Paparoa Ultra
The Paparoa Ultra is a community-run trail event in Punakaiki featuring a full-length run along the Paparoa Track. The main race covers 55 km of varied backcountry terrain, including native forest, alpine tops, swing bridges, and limestone cliffs. The course uses parts of an iconic New Zealand Great Walk and is remote with limited aid available on the track.
The event is limited to 200 competitors for the 55 km distance and is intended for experienced runners who can be self-sufficient and carry required gear. Registration and a compulsory gear check occur the day before the race at Barrytown Settlers Hall. Random gear checks are also conducted on course.
There are three staffed aid stations located near huts at 10.3 km, 20 km, and 39.1 km offering water refills, electrolyte drinks, snacks, and first aid. Competitors must start the race with a full drinking vessel and carry specified compulsory items such as thermal layers, waterproof jacket and pants, head torch, survival blanket, basic first aid kit, and their transponder and race number.
The event also includes a 1.5 km Kids Fun Run limited to 50 competitors and a prizegiving with category awards and spot prizes from local sponsors. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
