Paparoa Ultra : race information
The Paparoa Ultra is a community-run trail race covering the full 55 km length of the Paparoa Track near Punakaiki. The event is limited to 200 competitors and also includes a separate Paparoa Mile kids run limited to 50 entrants. The course runs through native forest, alpine tops, swing bridges and limestone cliffs and is described as a remote, technical backcountry route with minimal aid available.
Registration includes a race pack, transponder timing, shuttle transport between Punakaiki and the race start, medical support, aid station supplies, and a finishers medal or token. Three staffed aid stations are located near huts at approximately 10.3 km, 20 km and 39.1 km and provide water refills, electrolytes, snacks and first aid. Competitors must start with a filled drinking vessel because there is no water supply at the start.
Entry for 2027 opens on 1 September 2026 with a field size of 200 and an entry fee of $415 NZD. All entrants must register in person the day before the race at Barrytown Settlers Hall where a compulsory gear check and safety briefing take place. The race enforces cut-off times at aid stations; missing a cut-off requires following marshal instructions which can include exiting the track without a race time.
