About the race

Sole Survivor Backyard Ultra on September 12, 2026 in Richland, WA is organized by Nomad Trail Runners. The event follows the backyard ultra format: at the top of each hour runners leave to complete the same 4.16667-mile trail loop and must return before the hour ends. The sequence repeats until a single runner remains; that final runner must complete one additional solo loop to become the finisher. All other entrants receive a DNF because they did not match the finisher's distance.

The course begins with a short out-and-back paved section to space runners, then continues on mostly flat single track with about 40 feet of elevation gain per loop. The trail is roughly 30 to 40 percent shaded, contains some rocks and roots, and includes one short steep climb of about 6 to 8 feet vertical. Course markings and a route map will be provided.

There is a single aid station at the start and finish offering typical aid station food, substantial ice, and hot soup for overnight runners. BBQ food will be available at dusk. Pets are not allowed on course during the event except service animals. Crews and spectators may attend but cannot act as pacers or run the course; they should remain in the parking area. The event is an affiliate of the backyard ultra championship and winners may become eligible for championship entry with possible airfare support. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
