Sole Survivor Backyard Ultra - Richland, WA

Sole Survivor Backyard Ultra is scheduled for September 12, 2026 in Richland, WA, and is organized by Nomad Trail Runners. The event uses the backyard-ultra format: at the top of each hour runners start a 4.16667 mile trail loop and must complete it within the hour. This sequence repeats hourly until only one runner remains; that final runner must then complete one additional solo loop to become the finisher.

The course begins with a short out-and-back pavement section to space runners, then continues on mostly single track. Each loop has roughly 40 feet of elevation gain, 30 to 40 percent shade, some rocks and roots, and one short steep climb of about 6 to 8 feet. The route will be marked and a course map will be available.

There is one aid station at the start/finish offering typical aid station fare and ample ice; hot soup will be available overnight and a BBQ is planned at dusk. Crews and spectators may attend but crew members must remain in the parking area and may not run or act as pacers. Pets are not allowed on the course during running hours except for service animals. Runners may use time between loops for rest or personal care but may not leave the venue or start the next loop early.

This event is an affiliate of Big's Backyard Ultra. Runners who reach 100 miles (24 hours) will receive a custom belt buckle. If the event winner is granted entry to Big's Backyard, the organizer may cover airfare up to $500. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
