2026 SMOC Island Lake Spring Mill Pond

This is an orienteering event held at Island Lake with the start area at Spring Mill Pond on October 18, 2026. Participants use a detailed topographic map and a compass to navigate to a series of checkpoints in order. The event offers a range of courses from White through Red with varying distances and technical difficulty.

Courses and typical walking distances and times:

  • White - One to two miles; 30-60 minutes walking
  • Yellow - Two to three miles; 45-90 minutes walking
  • Orange - Three to five miles; 90-120 minutes walking
  • Brown - Three to four miles; 90-120 minutes walking
  • Green - Four to five miles; 120-150 minutes walking
  • Red - Five to seven miles; 150-180 minutes walking

Registration and fees are charged per start or group: standard fee is $15, reduced to $10 for members with the member coupon, and $5 for juniors listed as members. An extra map is $5. Volunteer roles are available that may waive entry fees.

The venue is part of the Rec Passport DNR program. The area immediately by the start and finish is a no hunting area; for longer courses wearing orange is recommended. Loaner compasses are available. Recommended clothing and equipment include long pants and sleeves, layers, shoes that can get muddy, water, snacks, and precautions for insects and ivy.
