SMOC Fall Huron Meadows
This is an orienteering event held at Huron Meadows in the Huron Clinton Metroparks. It uses point to point courses where participants navigate between checkpoints using a detailed topographic map and a compass. Route choice between checkpoints is up to the participant and can follow trails or go cross country.
Courses offered include:
- White/Beginner: One to two miles, 30 to 60 minutes, points on trails.
- Yellow/Intermediate: Two to three miles, 45 to 90 minutes, flags visible from trail.
- Orange/Advanced: Three to five miles, 90 to 120 minutes, cross country travel common.
- Brown/Expert Short: Three to four miles, 90 to 120 minutes, highest technical difficulty.
- Green/Expert: Four to five miles, 120 to 150 minutes, high technical difficulty.
- Red/Expert Long: Five to seven miles, 150 to 180 minutes, highest technical difficulty.
Participants are advised to prepare for off trail travel and variable terrain. Recommended clothing and equipment include long pants, long sleeves (ideally orange), layered clothing, shoes that can get dirty and spare shoes for afterwards, snacks and water, and insect and ivy precautions. Loaner compasses are available for those who need one.
Huron Meadows is within the Huron Clinton Metroparks and parking typically requires an H C M pass or other arrangements such as preordering a pass, obtaining one at the park clubhouse, or carpooling with a passholder. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
