Slate Trail Ultra

APEX Running will host the second edition of the Slate Trail Ultra in 2026. The event comprises two off-road ultra distances that follow the Snowdonia Slate Trail and visit areas of historic slate industry.

  • 147 km, 3,900m+ ascent, full Snowdonia Slate Trail
  • 80 km, 2,300m+ ascent, Ultra Tour of the Quarries

Routes run anti-clockwise and travel through a mix of low-level valley paths, higher mountain passes, moorland and river gorges. The courses visit villages and former slate mining sites, with views of Yr Wyddfa/Snowdon. The Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Logistics include multiple staffed aid stations (eight for the full route, four for the shorter route), a drop bag transfer to Blaenau Ffestiniog at 74 km for full-distance runners, GPX route files and a waterproof route map provided at registration. Finishers receive a locally produced slate finisher's medal, a hearty finisher meal and an entry contribution to UTMB/ITRA indexing. Live GPS tracking and event timing are provided.

Navigation responsibilities and mandatory kit are enforced. The UTQ route includes extended non-waymarked sections; all competitors must carry and be able to use a physical map and compass. Required items include a survival bag, full waterproof jacket and trousers rated to 10,000 mm, two working torches with separate spare batteries, 1.5 L minimum fluid capacity, whistle, mobile phone, cup for hot drinks and waterproofed spare warm layers. Full kit checks will be carried out and failure to carry mandatory items may result in disqualification.

Minimum recommended experience includes the ability to complete an 80 km off-road run with significant ascent and to apply sound mountain navigation and judgment. The full race has a 36 hour limit; the shorter route has a 24 hour limit. Routes and details are subject to change. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
