Sandy Bottom 8 Hour Training Run
The Sandy Bottom 8 Hour Training Run is a set of timed running events held at Sandy Bottom Nature Park in Hampton, VA. The event uses an approximately 5 km looped trail course that is described as very flat and includes portions of the Fallen Oak, Wetlands, Whispering Pines, Otey Shelton, Trillium, and Lake trails. The Start and Finish area is adjacent to the Lakeside Pavilion. The event is presented by the Peninsula Track Club.
Distances and formats offered:
- 8 hour time event
- 4 hour time event
- 5 km single loop run
Logistics note that the park opens at sunrise so parking and setup are allowed after that. Late starts are permitted for the 8 hour and 4 hour events with advance notice to the race director. The race operates as a cupless event, so runners should bring their own hydration device; an aid station will provide water, sports drink, and a variety of food items including gluten free, vegan, and nondairy options.
Facilities include a heated restroom in the Nature Center that serves as the primary facility during the event and additional bathrooms near the playground entrance. A large rented shelter with 15 picnic tables will be available for race support and on a first come basis for runner setups. Small tents up to 10x10 canopies are allowed but tarps or similar ground coverings are not permitted.
Awards and items: all finishers receive a homemade medal; additional swag may include customized beanies, neck gaiters, and bottle openers. Top three overall awards will be given for women and men in each event. Custom long sleeve shirts are available as an add on and shirt orders placed after December 25 cannot be guaranteed to arrive before the event date.
