Sam's Last Stand is a 96 mile fatass-style race across the Lone Star Hiking Trail in the Sam Houston National Forest near Cleveland, TX. The event follows the full LSHT from Trailhead 1 at the western terminus to Trailhead 15 near Cleveland, with a 36 hour cutoff to complete the route.
Organizers provide minimal water on course and allow drop bags. The event is not for profit; registration fees cover costs and any remaining funds will be donated to the LSHT Club. Registration closes Wed, Feb 24 at 11:59 PM CT.
The trail is marked with 2 inch by 4 inch aluminum markers and wooden directional signs. Colored bands on markers indicate connecting trails and should not be followed for this event; runners must follow the LSHT signs and know the route. All entrants must have the route loaded on their phone and be able to show proof at bib pickup or at the race start.
Participants should expect mixed trail and road sections and respect other hikers. On road sections, stay on the left side facing traffic and stay as close to the edge as possible. Possible natural hazards listed by organizers include spiderwebs, poison ivy, feral hogs, coyotes, and aggressive farm dogs. Recommended safety gear includes a rain jacket or poncho, gloves, beanie, and about 500 extra calories. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
