Event Overview
Sam's Last Stand is a long-distance trail running event held in the Sam Houston National Forest, located north of Houston. The race follows a fatass-style format, emphasizing self-sufficiency and minimal support. Participants traverse the entire Lone Star Hiking Trail (LSHT), starting at Trailhead 1 at the western terminus and traveling to the eastern end near Cleveland, Texas.
Course Information
The route spans a total distance of 96 miles. Runners navigate the Lone Star Hiking Trail, which is primarily marked with aluminum markers and wooden directional signs. Participants must follow specific LSHT signage and avoid connecting trails marked with colored bands. The course includes sections on public roads, where participants are expected to stay on the left side facing traffic.

Logistics and Requirements
The event provides minimal water along the course and allows for the use of drop bags. Runners have a 36-hour time limit to complete the full distance. All participants are required to have the route loaded onto their mobile phones and may be asked to provide proof of this before the start. Recommended safety gear includes a rain jacket or poncho, gloves, a beanie, and at least 500 extra calories.
