Runners Navigation Course
The Runners Navigation Course is a map reading and navigation workshop for runners held in Princetown on 10 January 2027. It is aimed at developing practical map and navigation skills for running off marked paths or in events that include self navigation. An instructor who is a qualified Mountain Leader will lead the session.
The course introduces core techniques including orientation of the map to ground, aiming off, thumbing the map, using a back stop and use of a compass. The day is split into a morning session that begins with introductions at Fox Tor Cafe, followed by a map only loop without a compass to practise reading ground features. After a lunch break in Princetown the afternoon focuses on compass use and applying the morning skills on the moor. The day ends with a short debrief and answers to questions.
Participants receive a pre-course presentation showing basic map reading, and after completion a short test route is provided to practise skills independently. The event notes gentle running with frequent stops for teaching and is not a race.
