Popeye's Backyard Ultra

Popeye's Backyard Ultra is scheduled for Saturday, April 3, 2027, at Greenland Open Space in Larkspur, Colorado. The event uses public trails on Douglas County open space and is run entirely on dirt and crushed gravel.

The race follows the backyard ultra format: participants run a 4.167-mile (6.706 km) loop called a yard. Each yard must be completed within the hour to continue; participants must be inside the starting corral when the next yard begins. There is no set distance and no overall time limit. The last runner to complete a yard alone is the winner; if no one completes an extra yard beyond all others, there is no winner. Personal aid and pacers are not allowed during a yard, and only restroom breaks permit leaving the course while a yard is in progress. Every completed yard is recorded and reported.

The course sits on the Palmer Divide across 1,200 acres of rolling grassland, oak draws, ponderosa and rocky mesas with the Front Range on the western horizon. Early April can bring a wide range of weather. Trailhead parking and port-o-lets are available. Aid is provided at the corral between yards and crews are welcome. A headlamp is required for any yards that start after sunset. Field size is 200 runners and the entry fee is $95. The event is permitted by Douglas County Open Space and is registered with the Backyard Ultra Association. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
