Paluma Ultra
The Paluma Ultra is a 52 km ultramarathon trail run that traverses the World Heritage listed Wet Tropics region of Paluma Range National Park. The course passes through wet tropical rainforest, past waterfalls and creek crossings, then descends into dry eucalypt and cattle country before climbing back into dense rainforest. The event starts and finishes in the township of Paluma, with course access and facilities based at local sites including the Gumburu Environmental Education Centre and Paluma Village Green.
The route follows a mix of single trail, dirt road and old logging tracks, with only 492 metres of bitumen. The course is described in eight sections, moving from village trails and rainforest to historic tin mining and logging remnants, a high peak at Mt Spec, 4WD tracks and a local village loop on return.
There are two manned aid stations and corresponding bag drop points at approximately 20 km and 38 km. Aid stations provide first aid, water and electrolytes, fresh fruit, lollies, small chocolate bars, small soft drink bottles and small salted chips. Runners are required to be self sufficient and carry mandatory equipment including a hydration vest or similar, adequate water and nutrition, compression bandages, an emergency blanket, whistle, headlight, a charged mobile phone with the course GPX downloaded, provided paper maps and a quality rain jacket for adverse conditions.
