Night Howler 50
The Night Howler 50 is a 50 mile ultramarathon held at Hoover Sports Park East in Hoover, Alabama and organized by The Running Birds. The race uses a lap format on a 2.5 mile loop; competitors complete twenty laps to cover 50 miles. The start and finish are located at the building in the middle of the baseball fields, which also serves as the main aid station.
The marked course crosses a bridge above the Cahaba River and descends four flights of stairs into wooded trails. The terrain is described as generally flat with a couple of small inclines and declines. Runners must be at least 19 years old. A 16 hour time cutoff applies for an official finish and to receive the event belt buckle; this cutoff corresponds to a 19:12 per mile pace.
Race day packet pickup is at the start finish area; participants must bring photo identification and will receive a race bib and a custom t shirt. There is space for crews to set up tents or personal aid stations outside the course. Pacers are allowed on course at any time.
The event is rain or shine. June conditions in Hoover are typically hot and humid with average highs near 88 and lows near 68, and runners are likely to be in darkness for much of the event, so a headlamp and spare batteries are recommended.
A full service aid station at the start finish will offer food and hydration every lap, with typical items such as pickles and fruit and occasional hot options. This is a cup less event and participants must provide their own cups or bottles. No refunds are offered; entries may be transferred or deferred by contacting the organizer. First aid, a medical tent, supplies, and an AED will be on site. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
