About the race
Nav Challenge 3 in Wicklow is the third race of an annual navigational challenge league. It is an unmarked map-and-compass event with two distance options:
- 15.00 km
- 8.00 km
The event is rated as difficult terrain with 200–500 m ascent and a course length greater than 10 km for the long route. Route marking is not provided and GPS navigation is not allowed. At the start each entrant receives a grid reference and descriptions for each control plus a punch card; competitors visit control sites in any order and mark controls on their map. A master map with controls marked is issued eight minutes after the start for reference. The long course includes some open mountain ground. The short course visits fewer controls.
Mandatory Level C kit is required and will be checked; the final kit to be carried may be adjusted on the day based on conditions. Required items include a waterproof jacket with hood and taped seams, hat or buff, gloves, whistle, charged mobile phone with emergency number, foil blanket or bivvy, waterproof full leg cover, means to carry at least 500 mL water, emergency food, map of the route/area, and a compass. Competitors should have means to carry the kit. Random kit checks may be carried out. Competition area bounds and arrival details will be posted closer to the date.
