Event Overview

The Nav Challenge 2 is the second race in the annual navigational challenge league. This event takes place in County Wicklow and is characterized as an unmarked navigational competition. Participants are required to navigate using only a map and compass, as the use of electronic GPS devices for navigation is strictly prohibited.

Course Information

The event features a format where participants receive grid references and descriptions for various control points at the start. Along with these references, runners are provided with a punch card. Entrants must mark the control locations on their own maps and may visit the sites in any order they choose. A master map with all controls marked is made available for reference eight minutes after the race begins.

Available course options include:

  • Long Course: Includes sections of open mountain terrain.
  • Short Course: Involves visiting fewer control points.

Requirements and Safety

Due to the nature of the unmarked course on open mountain terrain, entries from juniors are not permitted. Participants must be prepared to carry mandatory safety equipment, which includes a waterproof jacket with an integrated hood and taped seams, waterproof full leg cover, a hat or buff, gloves, and a whistle.

Additional required items include a foil blanket or bivvy bag, a mobile phone with the emergency number stored, emergency food, and the means to carry at least 500 mL of water. Runners must also bring their own map of the area, a compass, and a marker or pencil to plot coordinates. Kit requirements are finalized on the day based on local conditions. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
