About the race
The Midwinter Mortimer Trail is a winter trail event on 27 December 2026 in the Marches landscape of England. It follows the Mortimer Trail and finishes in the Herefordshire market town of Kington.
Distances
- 30ish miles from Ludlow Castle to Kington
- 16ish miles Croft Half from the Riverside Inn, Aymestrey to Kington
The courses mix trail, field and road and pass through extensive forests, limestone tops and gentle pastures. The route crosses the valleys of the rivers Teme, Lugg and Arrow and visits places such as the Mary Knoll Valley, the High Vinnals, Orleton Common, Croft Ambrey and Wapley hill fort while meandering through villages. The main route starts at the entrance archway of Ludlow Castle.
Estimated completion ranges are provided: for the 30ish mile route an estimated walk time of 8 to 12 hours and run time of 5 to 9 hours; for the 16ish mile route an estimated walk time of 5 to 8 hours and run time of 2 to 6 hours.
Age limits are specified: 30ish mile entrants must be 18 or older, Croft Half entrants must be 17 or older. Entry fees are shown as £60 for the 30ish mile route and £40 for the Croft Half. Registration locations are the Chapter66 cafe inside Ludlow Castle for the long route and the Riverside Inn, Aymestrey for the Croft Half. Transport from Kington to start locations is available for a stated fee of £15 per person. Participants receive an athlete guide before the event.
The event is part of the Wild Shropshire Ultra Series, a three-event series that offers a unique medal for those who complete all three events and a prize for the fastest combined time.
