Midwinter Mortimer Trail 2026

The Midwinter Mortimer Trail is a no-frills, self-navigating trail event that follows the Mortimer Trail through the Marches landscape. Routes traverse mixed trail, field and road terrain with extensive forests, limestone tops and gentle pastures. The course follows a succession of hills and ridges, crosses the valleys of the rivers Teme, Lugg and Arrow, and passes features such as the Mary Knoll Valley, the High Vinnals, Orleton Common, Croft Ambrey and Wapley hill fort, while meandering through several villages.

Distances

  • About 30 miles from Ludlow Castle to Kington
  • About 15-16 miles Croft course from Aymestrey to Kington

The longer route starts at the entrance archway of Ludlow Castle and finishes in the Herefordshire market town of Kington. The shorter Croft course starts at the Riverside Inn, Aymestrey, and also finishes in Kington. Estimated completion ranges are provided for walkers and runners: the Ultra has typical walk times of 8-12 hours and run times of 5-9 hours; the Croft course has typical walk times of 5-8 hours and run times of 2-6 hours.

Entry details include age limits (30 mile Ultra 18 or older; Croft 17 or older), entry fees (£60 for the 30 mile Ultra; £40 for the Croft), registration locations at the start venues and an optional transport service from Kington for a fee of £15 per person.

The event forms the opening race of the Wild Shropshire Ultra Series. Participants who complete all three series events receive a unique medal and a prize for the fastest combined time; indicating interest at entry is sufficient and there is no additional series charge.
