Massanutten Mountain Trails 100 Mile Run
The Massanutten Mountain Trails 100 Mile Run is a trail ultramarathon held on routes through the Massanutten Mountains in the George Washington National Forest in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. The event is based at Caroline Furnace Lutheran Camp in Fort Valley, VA.
The course covers 100 miles on rocky singletrack and includes short but rugged mountain climbs totaling more than 18,000 feet of ascent. The race has a 36 hour cutoff for completion. Aid stations are positioned along the course and the event publishes a Medical Emergency Plan that gives directions to the nearest medical facilities from each aid station.
Event logistics and runner support materials are provided in a Participants’ Guide that covers topics useful to runners, crews, and pacers. The organizing club sponsors a series of training runs on the course during the months before the race; these training runs begin on Martin Luther King Jr. weekend in January and typically run into April. Volunteer roles are used to staff aid stations and other race operations.
