Marin Ultra Challenge
The Marin Ultra Challenge is a trail ultramarathon held in the Marin Headlands, Mt. Tamalpais and Muir Woods near Sausalito, California. The event offers two main distances and a mix of coastal and inland terrain, including exposed fire roads, technical single-track under redwood canopy, and sections with broad coastal views.
Distances:
- 50 Mile - about 50.2 miles, approximately 10,550 feet of elevation gain
- 50K - about 30.8 miles, approximately 6,300 feet of elevation gain
Courses start and finish at Rodeo Beach and traverse named trails and landmarks such as the SCA and Julian trails, Coastal Trail, Miwok, the Dipsea, Cardiac Hill, Willow Camp, Stinson Beach, Muir Beach, and Zen Center. The route design minimizes overlap between distances and uses colored surveyor ribbon, laminated signs, and flour arrows at complex junctions; blue ribbons indicate wrong-way trails.
Aid stations provide a variety of food and hydration options and general first aid supplies; Gu gels are restricted at certain GGNRA aid stations. The event is cupless; each runner must carry a reusable cup or soft flask. Disposable timing chips are attached to bibs and live tracking is used at aid stations. Drop bags are accepted at designated aid stations and must be placed and collected according to posted instructions. Crew access varies by aid station and some aid stations require a short hike to reach. The event capacity is 450 runners. Dogs are not allowed on the course; leashed dogs may be at Rodeo Beach.
