Man v Horse
Man v Horse is a race organised by Green Events in Llanwrtyd Wells, scheduled for 12 June 2027. The event began in June 1980 after a conversation in a pub and the course was adjusted in 1982 to create a closer match between runners and horses.
Electronic timing with wearable tags was introduced in 2014 and results are published online. On several occasions runners have beaten all the horses; this occurred in 2004, 2007, 2022, 2023 and 2025. There is an escalating jackpot for any runner who beats the first horse and rider, starting at £500 and increasing by £500 each year the event takes place until it is won; the jackpot stood at £500 for 2026. The first jackpot won in 2004 had reached £25,000.
From 2025 the event also includes a cash prize of £250 for the first horse and rider to finish and pass the vet check. The event will be run cup-less, so competitors who need water at the stations must carry a collapsible cup or their own hydration.
The event has a duration of 6½ hours. Cut-off times are enforced: 3 hours for horses at the mid-way vet check, and 4½ hours for runners at the second relay changeover point, which is approximately 14 miles into the course. Organisers state the event is not a leisure event and volunteer marshals are not expected to wait for walkers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
