About the race
Machlud is a sunset trail half marathon held on the Clwydian Hills around Cilcain that finishes on the Moel Famau ridge. The route covers just over a half marathon distance of approximately 21.4 km (13.3 miles) and includes about 750 m of ascent, with the majority of climb occurring in the final 10 km.
Most of the course is on good quality tracks and paths, with a few marshalled quiet tarmac sections leaving and re-entering the village. The route follows sections of the Offa’s Dyke footpath and is waymarked throughout. A headtorch is mandatory for descent and the final section is marked with reflective arrows.
Race HQ is based at Ysgol y Foel school hall and field. Entries are limited and taken online via a timing provider; there are no entries on the day. The event accepts Canicross entries with dogs on leads, though some stiles require negotiation and owners should assess suitability. The event has an age limit of 17 and over and a total participant cap.
There are three main aid checkpoints offering water and snacks at CP1 Moel Arthur, CP3 Llangynhafal and CP5 Bwlch Penbarras, with additional water at CP4. All runners scan timing bands at six checkpoints. Post-race refreshments include hot soup and bread; vegan and gluten free options are available. Participants are asked to note any allergens on the entry form.
Mandatory kit includes a charged headtorch, whistle, refillable drinks container, foil bivvy bag and fell or trail shoes. Waterproofs and spare batteries are advised depending on conditions. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
