Locomotion Trail Runs
The Locomotion Trail Runs take place at Locomotion, Station Road, Eaglescliffe on 20 September 2026. The event marks the 201st anniversary of the S&DR railway and highlights regional engineering history. Two route options are offered, both using sections of the original railway corridor and nearby paths.
- 10 miles - partly along original railway; 3 miles road, 7 miles track.
- 5 miles - starts near the S&DR ticket office; 1.5 miles road, 3.5 miles track.
Both routes run through Preston Park and the Teesdale Way and finish at Locomotion. The 5 mile option includes provisioned free rail travel from Eaglescliffe Station to Thornaby Station for registered 5 mile runners, with a short walk over Thornaby bridge to the start. Northern Rail provides free use of the Eaglescliffe Station car park for competitors and supporters on the day.
Entries are available for individuals and teams. Published entry fees are £18.25 for the 10 mile individual entry, £10.00 for the 5 mile individual entry, and £30.00 for a four person 5 mile team. The event is open to participants aged 10 years and older; those aged 10 to 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Both events are dog friendly and prams are only suitable if designed for cross country use.
Proceeds support the Great North Air Ambulance and MND. Finishers receive medals and trophies are awarded to male and female winners. Sponsors and local organisations support event logistics and raffles for entrants include rail travel prizes and a conducted tour at the House of Commons.
