Event Overview
The Lion King Backyard Ultra is a standard backyard ultra race held in Rolla, Missouri, at Lions Club Park. The event follows the traditional format where participants must complete a 4.167-mile (6.706 km) loop every hour. The race continues until only one runner remains who can complete a final loop alone. This event is an affiliate of Big's Backyard Ultra, and the winner receives a bronze coin guaranteeing a spot in a silver ticket event.
Course Details
The race utilizes two different courses depending on the time of day:
- Day Course: A 4.167-mile dirt trail loop that winds through mature deciduous forests and cedar groves. The terrain includes small creek crossings and views of the local lake.
- Night Course: A flat, paved out-and-back trail that follows a flowing creek through the rural countryside on the outskirts of Rolla.
Participant Facilities
The starting corral is situated near several large pavilions, providing each runner with a dedicated 10x10 space for themselves and their crew. These pavilions offer cover, water spigots, and a charging station with USB and 110v outlets for electronic devices. Aid stations located at the start and the 2-mile mark provide water and restroom access. Crew members are permitted to set up tents in designated areas during race hours.
Rules and Awards
Participants must be in the starting corral when the bell rings every hour. No pacers or trekking poles are allowed on the course. The winner is awarded a custom belt buckle and the title of King or Queen. All participants receive a ribbon indicating the total number of miles and laps completed. 50% of the event's profits are donated to support suicide prevention and the local park.
