Land and Lakes Relay
The Land and Lakes Relay is a one-day, team relay covering about 61 miles between East Asheville and the Lake James area on March 6, 2027. Teams of four to six runners share the course in multiple legs, with each leg varying in distance. The route begins at Warren Wilson College and finishes at Fonta Flora Brewery Whippoorwhill Farm in Nebo, passing through Swannanoa, Black Mountain, Lake Tomahawk, Old Fort, downtown Marion, and the area around Lake James. There are eleven transfer points along the route where teams check in and record each leg.
Registration opens on July 1. Race entry is limited to 50 teams. Entry fees per team vary by date: July 1 to September 30 is $450, October 1 to January 31 is $500, and February 1 through race day is $550; additional service charges and taxes may apply via the registration platform. Each pre-registered team member receives an official race garment and event goodies; additional merchandise is offered during registration.
Teams are expected to be self-supporting for fluids and food; restrooms are provided at transfer points. During low-light hours runners must use visibility equipment such as reflective vests, headlamps, and flashing lights. Minimum age to participate is 18. Timing uses bibs with timing chips and transfer point splits; individual splits are calculated after the event and sent to team captains.
