About the race
Lakes in a Day is a point-to-point mountain ultra organised in the Lake District. The full route covers 50 miles with about 4000 m of ascent, traversing from Caldbeck to Cartmel via Helvellyn Ridge and the western shore of Windermere. The course climbs onto high fells and includes long exposed sections where mountain navigation and hill skills are required.
Distances:
- Full race: 50 miles, approximately 4000 m ascent
- Half race: shorter option held on the same day
The event requires a mandatory kit list to be carried regardless of weather. Key required items include a waterproof jacket and trousers, full leg cover, insulated layer, long sleeve top, warm hat and gloves, map and compass, torch with spare batteries (minimum 12 hours), bivy bag, a mug that holds at least 200 ml, whistle, mobile phone with backup charging option, and money. Cotton clothing is not suitable. Organisers may disqualify competitors who do not have the necessary kit.
Route waymarking is minimal: town sections may be marked but the high fell sections are not. GPS may be used as backup but must not be the sole navigation method. Feed stations provide hot drinks and a mix of savoury and sweet food; three main feed stations are provided. The entry fee includes medical cover, live tracking, finishers t-shirt and medal, and age category awards. A cash prize is offered for new course records subject to route requirements.
