Laich o' Moray 30 and 50 Mile Challenge Walks

The Laich o' Moray Challenge walks are LDWA challenge events offering circular routes with set maximum times. The two options are:

  • 30 mile route with a 14 hour time limit.
  • 50 mile route with a 24 hour time limit.

Both routes start and finish at Rafford Village Hall (grid ref NJ067556). The routes share the first 16 miles to Roseisle. From Roseisle the 30 mile route turns south via Alves village hall to the Heldon Hill ridge and rejoins the 50 mile route for the final seven miles. The 50 mile route continues along the coast to Lossiemouth, follows a disused railway and minor roads to Elgin, passes along the River Lossie, crosses the A96 and goes through forestry to Miltonduff, then gains the Heldon Hill ridge and stays high to the Califer viewpoint before returning to Rafford.

The route follows woodland, parkland, tarmac paths and coastal paths, and passes local features such as Dallas Dhu Distillery, Sueno's Stone, Findhorn and various beaches and cliffs. The event date is chosen with local tide times in mind so beach sections can be walked in daylight without getting feet wet.

The event is intended for experienced long distance walkers and runners; 50 mile entrants should have recently completed walks of over 25 miles. Booking is via SiEntries only, opens 1 March 2026, and the combined events are limited to 100 places. Entry fees for 2026 are listed separately for members and non-members. An event information pack, OS Explorer map 423 reference, GPX files and route descriptions are provided for participants. Camping on the adjacent playing field is permitted with rules to minimise disturbance; toilet access is available but there are no showers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
