King of the Mountain - Pāuanui
King of the Mountain is a single-stage trail running event held in Pāuanui on 2 January 2027 as part of the Pāuanui Summer Series. The course is a loop that starts and finishes at the Pāuanui Surf Club and passes the summit, Cave Bay, Flat Rock, and the South End Reserve.
The distance is 7.7 km with approximately 410 m of ascent. Terrain is pohutukawa and bush-lined slopes that are steep, rocky, and rooty from base to summit. The route is marked with high-vis tape and arrows, and marshals are stationed at key points. Timing is electronic using professional shoe-chip timing. Water is available only at Event HQ so participants should bring their own bottle or hydration pack.
Facilities include parking inside the Pāuanui Surf Club Reserve and public toilets at the Surf Club and South End Reserve. Spectator cheer zones are located at the South End Reserve and the finish chute. The event emphasizes local volunteers and a respect-for-place policy that asks participants to pack out what they pack in and to respect other trail users.
Entry fees are listed as Adults $50 and Under 16 $30. Every finisher receives a medal; age-group winners and overall top finishers receive additional trophies. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
