James River Trail Runs
James River Trail Runs takes place in Gladstone, Virginia, at James River State Park on April 10, 2027. The event is organized by Virginia Adventures and offers multiple distance options on a 10 mile loop course.
The loop includes varied trail surfaces with about 1025 feet of climbing per 10 mile loop. The first 5 miles contain sustained climbs and descents on single and double track. Around mile 6 the route parallels the Historic James River for approximately 3.5 miles that are relatively flat, and the final 0.5 mile returns with a steep climb to the start/finish. The 50 mile distance accumulates roughly 5000 feet of climbing.
Race format awards official finish times based on completed loops: one loop equals a 10 mile time, three loops equal a 50k time, and five loops equal a 50 mile time. A 16 hour overall cutoff applies to all distances. Runners who drop down are not eligible for top three awards.
Course changes for this year removed the Red Oak Campground and Taylor Pond section and added a loop around the picnic area near Canoe Landing campground to simplify navigation and move a secondary aid station closer to halfway.
Other features include hiker options on the same course with noncompetitive status, gluten free options stocked at aid stations, discounts for service roles, group discounts for parties of five or more, and a night 10 mile race on April 11.
