Iron X : Auburn, CA half marathon with extreme ironing
Iron X is an extreme ironing event organized by Skybreaker Racing in Auburn, CA. Participants run a half marathon distance while stopping to iron shirts at specific locations along a portion of the historic Western States Trail and in downtown Auburn. The event is described as a fatass group run with no course markings, no medical support, no medals, no trekking poles, and no pacers allowed.
There are eight named ironing locations, including the Foundation Iron at Robie Point, the River Iron just south of No Hands Bridge, the Foresthill Bridge Iron, the Dead Car Iron, the Statue and Train Car Iron in downtown Auburn, the Clock Tower Iron, the Courthouse Iron, and the Claude Chana Statue Iron in Old Town Auburn. Spectators are allowed at all ironing locations except the Dead Car Iron.
Rules require each participant to wear a button-up or snap-up shirt during the race, remove it, iron it, and put it back on at each location; an additional shirt may be worn underneath. Each participant must supply and carry their own ironing board, battery-powered iron, fuel, and water. Ironing boards must be at least 3 feet 3 inches long and 11 inches wide with full-length legs. Battery-powered irons must have an ironing face of at least 4 1/2 by 9 inches.
Proof of completion requires a public activity link plus geo-tagged photos or videos of each ironing showing the location, participant, iron, and board. Failure to provide required evidence adds a 10 minute penalty per location. New in 2027, aid and crew are allowed at the Foresthill Bridge Iron and the Statue and Train Car Iron, with a moving drop bag sent from the Start to those locations.
