About the race
The Ice Age Trail 50 is an annual trail event held on May 8, 2027, and is described as one of the oldest continuously running ultramarathons in the country. The course follows varied glacial landscape in Wisconsin, including dense deciduous forest, tall pines, rocky ridges, open prairies and visible glacial features such as lakes, kettles, kames and erratics.

Registration for the 2027 races opens on December 13, 2026, with a limited early registration event on December 5 for runners who meet specified eligibility criteria. The races typically sell out quickly. A wait list is maintained; historically every wait-listed 50 mile and 50K runner has been given the opportunity to run on race day, with openings processed in order. Refunds and bib transfers are not allowed. Runners may defer entries until February 22, 2027; deferrals grant one-year entry.
Pre-race and logistics details include two flagged training runs on April 17 (35 miles) and April 24 (19 miles) that together cover the full 50-mile course, a one-day Wisconsin state parking pass included with entry, and no camping allowed at the Nordic trail head. Pacers are not permitted in any race. Dogs are not allowed on the course; dogs are allowed in the finish area if leashed. Medical personnel will be available at the Start/Finish area.
