Ian Charlesworth Hartcliff Hill
Ian Charlesworth Hartcliff Hill is a BS category fell race on a marked and marshalled course where no navigation or prior fell-running experience is required. The course covers 4.6 miles / 7.4 km with approximately 709 ft / 216 m of ascent. Terrain includes a mixture of fields and rough tracks with three short sections of asphalt road.
The event starts and finishes on the Penistone playing fields next to the Bowling Club. The race previously started near Langsett reservoir but was relocated in recent years because of parking permissions. A revised route was introduced for 2025.
Entry details note a race limit of 200 and that pre-entry and on-the-day fees are to be confirmed. The minimum age to enter is 17 on 31 December 2027 in line with FRA rules; under-18s who are unaccompanied must provide a completed parental consent form. The race holds a permit and associated UK Athletics insurance from the Fell Runners Association.
Past editions include annual results back to 2005 and several cancellations: 2014 (Foot and Mouth), 2020 and 2021 (Covid-19), and 2022 (lack of parking facilities). Recorded fastest times vary by course configuration; notable recorded times include 14:54 (male, 2009) and 17:19 (female, 2006) for the 2005–2013 course, and more recent course times recorded in 2019, 2024 and 2025.
