Hornindalsrokken Skyrace
Hornindalsrokken Skyrace is a mountain skyrace of 17.5 km with about 1300 m total ascent, set in the Hjørundfjorden area. The route begins at Horndøla bru, follows gravel and off-road tracks to Hornindalssætra, then moves onto singletrack and alpine trails toward the small lake Store Luka before the steep climb up Rokkeråsa.
Rokkeråsa is a 1.3 km section that gains 506 m over loose, technical terrain and includes some scrambling. There is an aid station at the top of Rokkeråsa, located 6.4 km from the start. From there the course follows a ridge with exposed scrambling to the summit of Hornindalsrokken at 1,526 m. The descent includes steep sections, alpine terrain, rocky slabs, a river crossing into Kjellstaddalen, singletrack and a final gravel road to the finish at Trondstad Grendahus.
Safety and route changes are important parts of the event. The direct ridge route is used only in good weather; in poor weather a short loop is run instead of the direct ridge. Runners must be alert for loose rocks and warn others if stones are dislodged.
Mandatory equipment includes trail shoes with good grip, windproof jacket, warm buff or hat, gloves, an extra wool shirt, a small first aid kit, a whistle, a fully charged mobile phone, water and nutrition. A climbing harness and locking carabiner are required if the direct ridge route is used. Poles are not allowed. Crewing is limited to aid stations.
