Event Overview
The Hell Creek Half & 50K takes place at Wilson State Park in Sylvan Grove, Kansas. The event features races on the Switchgrass Mountain Bike Trail, a single-track course situated near Wilson Lake. The terrain is characterized as rugged yet runnable, with very few wooded areas, offering open views of the surrounding landscape. The trail is recognized as an EPIC rated mountain bike trail.
The course is a loop system primarily consisting of single-track trails. It is marked with ribbons, flags, and directional signs. Participants must carry a means to hold water at all times during the event.
Distances
- 50k: Approximately 32 miles consisting of a 19-mile loop followed by a 13-mile loop, with 3,000 feet of elevation gain.
- 1/2 Marathon: A 13-mile loop with an initial 1/3 mile on pavement and approximately 1,300 feet of elevation gain.
Course Details and Logistics
Two main aid stations are located at the start/finish area and "Hell Hill." These stations provide water, soda, and carbohydrate/electrolyte beverages along with standard ultra-running food items. For the 50k, additional unmanned water stations are positioned along the route.
The event has a strict cutoff time of 5:00 PM for both distances. Crew access is limited exclusively to the start/finish line, and pacers are not permitted. Participants must be at least 16 years of age. As the races are held within a state park, a Kansas State Park pass is required for vehicle entry.
Recognition and Awards
Finishers in the 1/2 Marathon receive a custom wooden medal and a dry-fit tank top. Participants completing the 50k receive a finisher's buckle and a dry-fit tank top. Awards are presented to the top three male and female finishers in both distances. Dogs participating with their owners are eligible for a specific medal.
