About the race

HELIOS is a timed trail ultra held in the Southern Kettle Moraine Forest near Eagle, Wisconsin. The event offers 6-, 12- and 20-hour formats and accepts solo runners or relay teams of up to four. The objective is to complete as many loops as possible within the chosen timeframe. The event is capped at 150 participants.

All loops start and finish at the main trailhead called the HELIOS Village. Loops are run clockwise and teams may have only one athlete on the course at a time. Exchanges for relay teams take place inside the village. A cabin and shelter at the trailhead provide a place to warm up and refuel; parking is adjacent to the trailhead and 20-hour participants have a designated area for drop bags.

Timing is manual: runners report to a volunteer timing station each lap, provide their athlete wristband number and the color of the loop completed, and volunteers track laps. Race results are posted inside the cabin shortly after the race and final results are published online by the end of the weekend.

Distances for the course loops:

  • Green Loop, 3.1 miles (5 km), Easy, 160 ft elevation
  • Purple Loop, 4.93 miles (8 km), Intermediate, 551 ft elevation
  • Modified Blue Loop, 6 miles (9.65 km), Intermediate, 600 ft elevation

Included with entry are hot beverage service (bring your own cup), a post or during race meal, a glowing wristband, and event merch items such as a trucker hat and a wooden finisher medal. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
