Great Eastern Endurance Run (GEER) at Sherando Lake

The Great Eastern Endurance Run takes place at the Sherando Lake Recreation Area in Lyndhurst, VA and offers trail races on mountain terrain. Distances include:

  • 40 Miler
  • 20 Miler
  • 10 Miler

The courses run on mostly singletrack and remote forest road with brief pavement sections. Runners encounter ridgelines, steep switchbacks, rocky jeep roads, and a summit at Bald Mountain. Aid stations are provided along each course and are stocked with water, electrolyte drink, ice, fruit, salty snacks, sweet items, GU vanilla gels, candies, chips, and pretzels.

Aid station counts by distance are specified: the 40 Miler has seven aid stations not including start and finish, the 20 Miler has two aid stations, and the 10 Miler has one aid station. The longest unsupported stretch noted is 9.3 miles on the 20 Miler. Cutoff times are enforced for safety; the 40 Miler cutoff is 12 hours and the 20 Miler cutoff is 6 hours.

Crew access is allowed at designated points reachable via the Blue Ridge Parkway; vehicles should park with all four wheels off the pavement. The 40 Miler includes one crew only location at Bald Mountain Overlook that is not an aid station.

A drop bag policy limits bags to small backpack size, prohibits valuables, requires clear labeling with aid station name, bib number, and runner name, and states unclaimed bags will not be shipped. Kennedy Trail drop bags are returned to the finish around mid afternoon and Bald Mountain drop bags return later and are not vehicle accessible.

The event is produced by Bad to the Bone Sports. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
