Geode Challenge Races
The Geode Challenge Races take place at Geode State Park near Danville, IA, on October 17, 2026. The event is an annual trail race that raises funds for Friends of Geode and supports projects at the park. This edition marks the event's eighth year and Geode State Park's 75th year.
Distances offered:
- 25K double loop, about 15.5 miles
- 12K perimeter loop, about 7.75 miles
- 5K out-and-back from the beach to Shelter 1, about 3.1 miles
The trails include dirt single track and wide track, large rock sections, small gravel, road mix, sand, mowed grass, road sections, many hills, a creek crossing, and roughly 800 feet of vertical gain on the perimeter loop (about double for the 25K). The course is marked with flags, ribbons and signs. Shelter 4 awning will be used despite state closure of that area; Shelters 1 and 4 will offer water and light snacks. Water is also available at the start/finish area and there is a refill point for 25K participants.
All finishers receive a geode. Handmade wooden plaques with mounted geodes will be awarded to first place male and female in each distance. A Top Dog plaque will be awarded to the first overall finisher in each distance running with a dog; runners with dogs are not eligible for the standard first place male or female plaque.
