Geode Challenge Races
The Geode Challenge Races are trail races held at Geode State Park, beach area, in Danville, IA (3333 Racine Ave). The event offers three distances and is organized to raise funds for Friends of Geode park projects, including recent renovations to the beach concession building.
Distances:
- 25K (15.5 miles) double loop of the perimeter trail
- 12K (7.75 miles) single perimeter loop
- 5K (3.1 miles) out-and-back from the beach to Shelter 1
Trails include dirt single track, wide track, sections with large rock, small gravel, road mix, sand, mowed grass, road sections, numerous hills, a creek crossing, and about 800 feet of vertical elevation on the perimeter loop (approximately double for the 25K). The course is marked with flags, ribbons, and signs. Water is available at the start/finish area for finishers and at shelters 1 and 4; shelters will also offer light snacks for runners.
Dogs are allowed on course but must be leashed and kept from creating tripping hazards. Runners with dogs are not eligible for the standard first place male/female plaques but may receive the TOP DOG plaque for first overall with a dog. There are no cash prizes for dog runners.
All finishers receive a geode and first place finishers receive handmade geode-mounted plaques. Entry fees range from USD 35.60 to 65.02. Online registration closes on Tue Oct 13, 2026 at 11:59 PM CT; day-of registration is available by cash or check with an increased fee.
