Broken Anvil Backyard Ultra
The Broken Anvil Backyard Ultra is a distance event held in West Point, Iowa, affiliated with the Backyard Ultra Series. The race follows a specific format where participants complete a 4.167-mile loop, known as a "yard," every hour. A new yard begins precisely one hour after the previous one started, and runners must be in the starting corral to begin each lap. The event continues until only one runner remains who can complete a loop within the time limit.
The course is a custom path through South Park and the Pollmiller Lake Campgrounds system. It features approximately 175 feet of elevation gain and loss per loop. The terrain is composed of:
- 80% paved bike path and road
- 10% crushed gravel
- 10% trail and grass path
The same course is used for both day and night laps. Facilities include a 10' x 10' area for each participant for tent setup and crewing on the soccer field. Unlimited water is provided, along with minimal fruit, snacks, electrolyte supplements, and coffee. Participants are expected to bring the majority of their own aid.
The event location at South Park offers parking and access to the Pollmiller Lake Campground, which includes electrical campsites and a beach area. The race is open to those looking to reach ultra-distances or complete individual loops. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
