About the race

The Forest of Dean Ultra Marathon is a 55 km circular route that takes in the highlights of the Forest of Dean. The course mixes technical single track with wide open stretches beside the River Wye, ridge lines with open views, fields and extensive woodland views reaching toward the Brecon Beacons. The route passes Symonds Yat viewpoint and follows sections toward Monmouth while returning through key forest and countryside points.

This is a self‑navigated event. Participants must follow a precise GPX file provided before the race; the exact route can change year to year. Navigation ability is explicitly required and the top finishers will be asked to submit GPX files for verification. There is a 10 hour time limit for completing the course.

Race HQ and parking are at Beechenhurst in the Forest of Dean. The event provides a minimum of three well stocked aid stations with toilets, drinking water, food, snacks, electrolytes and parking for support vehicles. Additional provisions include professional timing, free race photos, support vehicles for pick ups, qualified race and medical personnel, a finishers medal and event merchandise. A separate canicross category is available.

Mandatory kit requirements include a GPX file on a phone or watch, a charging battery pack, navigation method or device, trail shoes, waterproof jacket, hydration system (minimum 1 litre recommended 1.5 litres), survival bag, basic first aid, whistle, head torch, personal nutrition and a fully charged mobile phone. A portion of the entry fee supports Forestry England. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
