About the race
The Fonta Flora event offers trail races set at Fonta Flora Brewery Whippoorwill Farm in Nebo, North Carolina, near Shortoff Mountain and the Linville Gorge. Races take place on trails and along the banks of Lake James State Park, with a combination of stream side singletrack, rolling mountain bike trails through dense forest, and singletrack along the lake shore. The course begins in a large field with mountain views and returns to the farm.
Distances include:
- 50K
- Half Marathon
- Relay
Course metrics for each race are provided by the organizer. The half marathon lists about 900 feet of elevation gain, a four hour time limit, roughly 12.5 miles of singletrack, about 1 mile of gravel, and about 0.5 miles of pavement. The 50K lists about 2,400 feet of elevation gain, a 9.5 hour time limit, roughly 29 miles of singletrack, about 1 mile of gravel, and about 1 mile of pavement. The 50K also includes about seven miles on a new section of the Fonta Flora State Trail with lake and mountain views.
Aid stations appear at specified mileages for each distance and supply at minimum water, electrolyte drink, soft drinks, and a variety of prepackaged foods and fruit. Packet pickup is available at the farm the evening before race day and on race mornings. Camping is available within five miles at Lake James State Park and other accommodations are listed by the organizer. The event includes overall and masters awards and a finisher medal made by a local artist. The organizer requests that participants stay on marked trails, not cut switchbacks, avoid littering, and follow race officials' requests.
