Event Overview
The Elm Creek Backyard Ultra returns for its sixth year in Maple Grove, Minnesota. Held at the Elm Creek Park Reserve, this event follows the traditional backyard ultra format inspired by Big Dog’s Backyard Ultra. It serves as a Bronze Ticket qualifier for the Big's Backyard Team Championships scheduled for the fall of 2028.
Course Details
The race takes place on the south side of the park, starting and finishing at the Bluebird Picnic area. The route follows the lake trail and circles Mud Lake, featuring 296 feet of elevation gain and loss per lap. To provide variety, the direction of travel rotates between clockwise and counter-clockwise every few hours.
Competition Format
Participants must complete a 4.167 mile loop every hour. The rules require runners to be in the starting corral when the bell rings at the top of each hour. Whistles are blown at three, two, and one minute before each start. The event continues until only one runner remains; this person must complete one final solo loop to be declared the winner. All other participants receive a DNF (Did Not Finish) designation, though their total distance is recorded.
Facilities and Support
Runners must provide their own aid, either independently or through a personal crew. While on the course, no pacing or outside assistance is permitted. Between loops, participants can access their support crews in the designated area. A space near the start and finish line is provided for chairs and coolers, and a separate area approximately 50-100 yards away is available for setting up tents.
