Dragon's Back Race

The Dragon’s Back Race is a six day ultra running event across Wales covering a total of 380 km with 16,400 m of ascent, running from Conwy Castle to Cardiff Castle. The course is largely unmarked on the ground and requires individual navigation using a supplied Harvey Maps 1:40,000 event map; digital GPX files (one file per day) are also provided.

Participants carry a GPS tracker issued at registration that records location, assists race control and can summon help in an emergency. The tracker must be carried on the course each day and is attached to the rucksack for best reception. Navigation confidence, map reading and familiarity with GPS devices are recommended because some ground is indistinct and visibility can be poor.

Daily support includes at least two manned checkpoints, a mid-route support point providing water and access to resupply dry bags, and a well equipped medical team at overnight camps and support points. Overnight camps provide communal catering based on a meat and fish free menu with optional dairy; shower facilities are limited. Mandatory kit is enforced with random daily checks; a survival bag is required rather than a simple survival blanket. Weather in September is variable with possible temperatures from about 5°C to 25°C, so appropriate clothing and carrying a headlamp are required for safe participation.

Alternative options include shorter two day events and the Hatchling, which allows doing part of the route each day. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
