Dragon's Back Race

The Dragon's Back Race is a multi day, multi stage ultra running event across Wales. The Full Dragon covers 380 km with 16,400 m of ascent and follows a route from Conwy Castle to Cardiff Castle. The event is held annually in September and runs with overnight camps and daily support points.

Navigation and safety are core parts of the event. The route is not marked on the ground and participants must carry the Harvey Maps 1:40 000 scale event map supplied at registration. GPX files for each day are provided and a GPS tracker is issued at registration; this tracker must be carried and is used by race control for tracking and emergency location. A single mandatory route was introduced from 2026.

Daily logistics include at least two manned checkpoints and a support point where participants can access their resupply dry bag and mains drinking water. Overnight camps provide communal catering on a meat and fish free menu with vegetarian options and limited showering opportunities; a device charging point is available in the communal marquee. A well equipped medical team is present at overnight camps and support points. Participants are expected to be self sufficient, carry mandatory kit, and be prepared for rough, remote and unmarked mountain terrain with variable weather.
