Dick Fitzgerald 2-Mile Beach Run

The Dick Fitzgerald 2-Mile Beach Run is a coastal running event held as part of the International Surf Festival. The course consists of a 2-mile route that begins and ends at the Hermosa Beach Pier. Participants travel north behind the lifeguard towers, passing the Longfellow tower until reaching a designated turn-around marker.

The course features two distinct types of terrain. The first half of the run takes place on soft sand, while the return trip to the pier follows the hard-packed sand near the water’s edge. This combination of surfaces provides varying levels of footing throughout the race.

The event includes several age divisions for men, women, boys, and girls:

  • 10 & under
  • 11-14
  • 15-19
  • 20-29
  • 30-39
  • 40-49
  • 50-59
  • 60-69
  • 70 & over

Medals are awarded to the first through third-place finishers in each of these divisions. Pre-registered participants are guaranteed an event t-shirt, while a limited number of shirts are available for those who register on the day of the event on a first-come, first-served basis.

The race is organized by the Mira Costa Track and Cross Country teams, with proceeds benefiting the program. It is named in honor of a former Director of the Department of Beaches who was instrumental in founding the International Surf Festival.
