Death by 5k Tyler
Death by 5k Tyler is a 24 hour running challenge held at Tyler State Park in the Blackjack camping area. The format requires participants to run ten separate 5k efforts, with a new 5k beginning every 2.5 hours across a full 24 hour period. Participants must be present at the start of each 5k and complete that 5k before the next one begins. The format includes running in the dark, so headlamps, hand lights, or another form of illumination are required.
The event uses adjacent dirt trails that feature rocks, roots and possible mud. The course is noted to be closer to 3.6 miles rather than a precise 5k. The Blackjack area serves as race headquarters and tent camping is allowed there; participants may sleep in vehicles or set up tents between runs. Parking will be in nearby lots and along the main park road. The race HQ is limited to tent camping only; those who wish to use a camper must reserve a campsite through the park reservation system.
Hot meals are provided multiple times during the event and snack food is available throughout. Drinks provided include water and mixed Gatorade. Each participant receives an event shirt and additional swag; finishers receive a coffin style award. Registration is limited to 150 participants, after which a waitlist will be used. A registration fee of $170 applies and a day use park fee must be paid upon entrance. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
