Event Overview

Death at DuPuis is a last person standing race conducted in the DuPuis Management Area in Canal Point, Florida. The event follows the traditional backyard ultra format, serving as a local opportunity for runners to experience a race structure and terrain similar to the original Big's Backyard in Tennessee. This is a non-profit event organized by Mule Racing in coordination with the Athletic Soul Foundation, with proceeds and donations supporting the Florida Trail Association (FTA) and the Loxahatchee chapter.

Course and Format

The race takes place on a 4.166667 mile loop consisting of single-track trails maintained by local volunteers. The competition follows a specific hourly schedule:

  • 4.166667 mile loop

All participants start the loop at the top of the hour. The race continues until only one runner can complete the loop within the allocated hour, or until all other participants have withdrawn. Warning whistles are provided at three, two, and one minute prior to each new start.

Venue and Amenities

The DuPuis Management Area spans 21,875 acres across Palm Beach and Martin counties, featuring a landscape of cypress domes, pine flatwoods, wet prairies, and remnant Everglades marsh. The start and finish area accommodates coolers, chairs, and canopies on a first-come, first-served basis. Because the area is located far from urban centers, it is known for its dark skies and natural scenery.

Awards and Recognition

As a Bronze Ticket event, the winner receives entry into the Capital race in Virginia and a financial stipend for travel. Participants receive shirts and awards for their performance. Registration fees also cover event infrastructure such as timing and portable toilets, with surplus funds donated to maintain the local trail systems. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
