Dartmoor’s Ancient Field Boundaries: a 13-mile guided run

This guided run starts from Newbridge Car Park in Holne and explores Dartmoor’s network of hedges and stone walls. The activity lasts about four hours and includes frequent short stops to explain the origins, traditional management, biodiversity, current threats and conservation of field boundaries.

The route follows the River Dart to Bench Tor and continues to Combestone Tor, where refreshments will be available. The course passes Bronze Age field systems, then climbs to Ryder’s Hill, the highest point on South Dartmoor, passing ancient tin workings and hut circles. The descent leads toward Scorriton with medieval field systems on either side and examples of recently laid and trimmed hedges. The route continues through the village of Holne and returns into the Dart Valley for a riverside picnic and a swim.

The run covers 13 miles (21 km) with 2,230 ft (680 m) of ascent. Participants should use trail shoes, have experience running on uneven ground, and possess sufficient fitness to complete a half marathon in under four hours. The event is open to ages 18 and over. Paid parking is available. Refunds are offered up to seven days before the event.

Organised by Proper Edges, a small business in South Devon offering rural services, products, training and consultancy. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
