Dartmoor’s Ancient Field Boundaries

This is a guided 13 mile run based at Newbridge Car Park in Holne that explores Dartmoor’s network of hedges and stone walls. The route gains about 2,230 ft (680 m) of ascent and is planned to take around 4 hours with frequent short stops for interpretation. The run follows the River Dart to Bench Tor and Combestone Tor where refreshments are provided, passes Bronze Age field systems, climbs to Ryder's Hill the highest point on South Dartmoor, and continues past ancient tin workings and hut circles. The route then descends towards Scorriton with medieval field systems on either side, passes examples of recently laid and trimmed hedges, moves through the village of Holne, and returns to the Dart Valley for a picnic and a swim in the river.

Participants are expected to wear trail shoes, have experience running on uneven ground, and have the fitness to complete a half marathon in under 4 hours. The event is for ages 18 and over. The organizer is Proper Edges, a small business in South Devon offering traditional rural services, products, training and consultancy. Paid parking is available at the location. Refunds are offered up to seven days before the event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
