About the race
The Crater Rim Ultra is a trail running event held on the Port Hills around Ōtautahi Christchurch, crossing picturesque Lyttelton Harbour on the way to the Crater Rim. The 2026 edition marks the 25th running of the event on Sunday 18 October.
Multiple courses run on a variety of terrain, from short valley trails to long ridge routes. Distances offered include:
- 53 km Crater Rim Ultra
- 30 km Bellbird Buster
- 22 km Kiwi Challenge
- 12 km Rapaki Rumble
- 6 km Valley View
- Hansen Park Dash with 1 km and 2 km options
Course descriptions highlight harbour, hill and city views, native bush and coastal sections, plus climbs to summit viewpoints such as the Sign of the Kiwi. The organisers note that $5 from each entry fee will be donated to local trail custodians including the Summit Road Society, Mt Vernon Park Trust and Te Ahu Pātiki Charitable Trust. Event resources include training plans and official 2026 merchandise such as technical tops, hoodies and caps.
