Crater Rim Ultra 2026
The Crater Rim Ultra marks its 25th edition on Sunday 18 October 2026. The event takes place on the Port Hills around Christchurch and features trail courses with hill, city, and harbour views. The main ultra crosses Lyttelton Harbour to the race area and follows the Crater Rim terrain.
Distances offered include:
- 53 km Crater Rim Ultra course
- 30 km Bellbird Buster through native bush and coastal landscapes
- 22 km Kiwi Challenge to the Sign of the Kiwi
- 12 km Rapaki Rumble with a climb to Summit Road and harbour views
- 6 km Valley View through a valley trail section
- 1 km and 2 km Hansen Park Dash options for younger participants
Organisers note partnerships and support from organisations such as La Sportiva, ITRA, Athletes for Nature, UTMB index races, and local groups. A video archive from the 2019 race shows pre and post race scenes and course conditions, including muddy sections.
Trail maintenance for many of the routes is provided by the Summit Road Society, the Mt Vernon Park Trust, and the Te Ahu Pātiki Charitable Trust. As a contribution to these custodians, five dollars from each entry fee is donated. Volunteers and marshals are listed as a key part of event operations. Training plans and event merchandise are available to participants. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
