Cottonmouth 8 Mile & Beerlay
The Cottonmouth Beerlay is an 8 mile trail event held at Lakewood Nature Preserve in Greenville, SC. The course is four laps of a 2 mile grassy trail loop through the preserve. The event offers two formats: solo runners or relay teams of 2 to 4 people.
This event includes a BYOB drinking element. Before each lap, runners must consume a randomly selected beer from the community pool. Solo runners bring four beers (5%+ ABV); relay teams contribute four beers total. Beers are placed in an iced community pool and handed to runners already opened and poured. No swapping or peeking is permitted. The drinking portion is restricted to people 21 and older; minors and sober participants may use carbonated non-alcoholic alternatives.
Chip timing and four-lap split tracking are provided for both solo and relay participants. All finishers receive a medal. Top three overall awards are given for male and female solo runners 21 and older, and top three team awards are given across multiple divisions, including men, women, mixed, mixed masters (40+), youth (under 21), and a non-alcoholic division.
Additional event details include on-site packet pickup, gear check for BYOB at tables outside the barn, parking in adjacent field lots with a $5 parking/permit fee collected during registration, water at the finish line, three portable toilets at start/finish, free race photos, event giveaways, music, and a post-race Beer Olympics with games such as beer pong, tug of war, dodgeball, cornhole, hillbilly golf, and spike ball. The event supports local nonprofits through the Giving Series. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
