South Downs Way 50km
The South Downs Way 50km is a 50 km nonstop foot race held entirely within the South Downs National Park in South East England. The route starts at Matterley Bowl near Winchester and finishes in the event field at Queen Elizabeth Country Park, at the foot of the descent from Butser Hill.
The course is roughly 31 miles with about 1150 m of ascent (listed as 3800 ft) and is approximately 80% trail and 20% road. Much of the route follows the South Downs Way National Trail and passes through villages and areas of ancient woodland. The course is fully marked with Centurion ribbons and marker arrows.
Runners are supported by four fully stocked aid stations, full medical cover including static and roving teams, live tracking, and finish line food and hot drinks. The event enforces a nine hour cut off and additional on route cut offs at aid stations. Pacers and crews are not permitted.
Entries for 2027 opened on 19 July 2026. The entry fee is £85 (£87 unaffiliated). The field is limited to 400 starters. There are no qualification standards and the minimum age is 20 in line with UKA rules. Finishers receive a medal and category prizes are awarded to finishers only.
Mandatory kit includes a fully charged mobile phone, water capacity of at least 1 litre, a survival blanket (minimum 1.4 m x 2 m), a waterproof jacket with sealed seams and minimum 10000 mm rating, and a cup. A one hour time penalty applies for missing mandatory items. Finish bag capacity must not exceed 50 litres. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
