About the race
The South Downs Way 100 is a 100 mile non-stop foot race along the South Downs Way National Trail, held on 12 June 2027. The route follows the chalk ridge from Matterley Estate near Winchester to the finish at Eastbourne Sports Club Athletics Track, covering 100 miles / 161 km with about 12,700 ft / 3,800 m of ascent. The course surface is roughly 85% trail and 15% road and features exposed ridge sections, chalk bed and rock that can be slippery in wet conditions.
The race is fully marked and supported with a minimum of 12 aid stations, full medical provision, live tracking and finish-line food. Runners must complete within a 30 hour overall cut off; there are additional cut offs at aid stations. The event includes two start waves, with overall awards limited to the first wave and age-group awards open to both waves.
Entry information includes a fee of £225 and a field of 600 starters. Qualification requires a completed 50 mile race within 15 hours, dated from 1 January 2020 to race day; unqualified entrants may be contacted about verification. Drop bags are accepted for specified aid stations, size limited to 50 x 30 x 30 cm, and three formal drop points are provided including the finish.
Pacers are permitted from the Kithurst Hill crew point (mile 50), crews have restricted access points and one crew pass per runner is issued. Mandatory kit requirements include a charged mobile phone, 1 litre water capacity, survival blanket, waterproof jacket with sealed seams, whistle, a headtorch and backup light from Washington onwards, a warm layer kept dry, and a cup or mug.
