Carmel Valley Trail Race
The Carmel Valley Trail Race takes place in Gonzales Canyon Open Space with start and finish at Solana Ranch Park in Carmel Valley. The course design gives a flat start and finish with the main elevation gains concentrated in the middle sections.
Distances offered include:
- 10 Mile
- 10K
- 5K
The routes run on single track, dirt roads, and sand; course descriptions list dirt as the primary surface. A notable feature on the longer courses is the locally named "Puke Hill," described as roughly 1/10 mile with about 300 feet of gain and appearing on the 10 Mile and 10K routes. Overall elevation gain varies by event, from about 144 feet up to 885 feet depending on the chosen distance.
Course formats include out-and-back layouts. Aid stations and time limits vary by distance; some longer courses include one or two aid stations, and course time limits range up to three hours while the 10K has a two hour limit. Entry is limited to 300 runners due to park guidelines. The event is organized as an annual trail race through coastal canyon terrain and natural open space.
