Event Overview
The BUTS Bearly Ultra takes place at Red Mountain Park in Birmingham, Alabama. This trail event utilizes the diverse terrain of the local landscape, featuring a mix of runnable old rail beds and technical single-track paths filled with roots. Participants pass through notable locations such as Grace's Gap Overlook and various old mine shafts along the route.
The course is designed as a 13.5-mile loop with approximately 1,500 feet of elevation gain. Runners can choose between two primary distances:
- 13.5 Miler (one loop)
- 27 Miler (two loops)
Course and Amenities
The route includes sections like the BMRR trails for faster running and areas like Ike that require more vertical effort. There is a centralized aid station that runners pass multiple times, which is fully stocked with refreshments. At the finish line, participants are provided with hot food and cold drinks. All finishers receive a unique medal to commemorate the event.
Logistics
Bib pickup is held on the morning of the race at Red Mountain Park. The event uses HuTags for timing, which are worn on the ankle; the organizers recommend wearing taller socks for comfort. The 27-mile race has an 8.5-hour cutoff, while the 13.5-mile race has a 7.5-hour cutoff.
The event is organized by BUTS, and a portion of each entry fee is donated back to the park system to support the maintenance and creation of local trails. Red Mountain Park is part of the Jeff Co Greenways partnership. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
