Brokenagan Backyard Ultra
The Brokenagan takes place on July 24, 2027 in Vernon, BC, at Silver Star Provincial Park, near the Sovereign Lake Nordic Club trails and at an elevation of about 5,500 feet. The event offers two main formats: the Backyard Ultra and a separate 24 hour solo endurance run.
The Backyard Ultra uses a loop of 4.17 miles (4 miles 880 feet; metric equivalent 6.7056 kilometers). One loop must be completed every hour on the hour; each loop must be finished in less than an hour to count. The Backyard Ultra course follows single and double track trails with a mix of hard pack and grassy surfaces, passing through forest, open meadows, marshy lowlands, and a mountain lake on well maintained cross-country ski trails. Backyard Ultra rules include a fixed starting corral, timed hourly starts at the bell, no personal aid during a yard, restrictions on non-competitors on course, a ban on artificial aids, and the rule that the last person to complete a yard is the winner; if no one completes more yards than the others there is no winner.
The 24 hour solo format runs on a separate course made of repeated 5 km loops. Early entry fee is CAD 100 until January 31, 2027. Participants must be 18 years or older on race day; minors may participate with prior permission from the race director. Optional extras include a guaranteed T shirt for CAD 30 and a meal for CAD 15; registration is via UltraSignup.
A manned aid station is available each lap with water, Tailwind, GU gels, electrolytes, fruit, snacks, music, massage (11am to 3pm), and volunteers. Participants receive a custom bib, a swag bag, and a finisher prize. The venue provides a large staging area for aid tents and resting between laps.
