Bowels of Honister 5km & 10km Fell Races
The event at Honister Slate Mine in Borrowdale on 27 June 2027 offers two flagged and marshaled fell race courses over rough, mountainous terrain. Both courses include an underground mine section of approximately 750 metres accessed after an initial uphill approach; runners start the underground section wearing a helmet and headtorch and are marshaled through the tunnels.
The routes require no navigation or map reading because red flags, arrow boards, and marshals keep participants on course. After the underground section runners emerge partway up Fleetwith Pike and continue onto open fell terrain including the summit of Grey Knotts at 697 metres on the 5 km route. The 10 km route follows the 5 km profile after an additional roughly 5 km loop that returns via the visitor centre and Quarry Road.
Minimum kit requirements include a waterproof top and bottoms, hat, and gloves for emergency use. The event is open to participants aged 16 and over; under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult at registration. Prize categories include first to third male and female and Vet50 male and female for both distances. Entries open 6 November 2026 and close 24 June 2027; entry fees are £30 for the 5 km and £35 for the 10 km. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
